Carl Maria von Weber

Portrait of WeberWeber (1786-1826) was one of the most important composers for clarinet of the early Romantic period. His compositions included a concertino, two solo concerti, a duo concertante, and many noted orchestral parts in his operas.

Weber had a rather unfortunate personal life: he was pushed to become a child prodigy, despite ill health. He became an opera conductor at 18, though his baritone voice was destroyed when he mistook engraving acid for wine. After serving a jail sentence in Stuttgart (his crime is disputed), he was exiled; he eventually arrived in Vienna, where in 1811 he wrote the clarinet concertino for Heinrich Baermann. The King of Bavaria so enjoyed the piece that he immediately commissioned the two clarinet concerti.
